Miami to the Bahamas: By Yacht, by Seaplane, or Both

Yacht anchored in turquoise water off a Bahamas island

The Bahamas start just 50 nautical miles from Miami, which makes them one of the easiest island escapes in the world. There are two good ways to get there with Altrove: on the yacht itself, or by seaplane with the yacht or a hotel waiting on arrival.

Option 1: Cruise over on the yacht

Bimini is the closest island and the natural first stop. On a multi-day charter, the crossing takes a few hours depending on the yacht and the sea. The Gulf Stream sits between Miami and the islands, so the captain picks the day and time based on the weather. Once you arrive, customs clearance is coordinated for you, and from Bimini you can continue toward Nassau, the Exumas or the Berry Islands.

Multi-day charters are priced per day. On the yachts we book, that starts with the 88-foot Princess and continues to larger yachts; multi-day bookings on Orca and Tycoon are by inquiry. Every quote itemizes the APA, gratuity and any taxes.

Option 2: Fly over by seaplane

If you only have a day or two, a seaplane is the fastest way across. Our sister brand, Altrove Jets, arranges a dedicated Miami–Bahamas seaplane for up to 8 passengers. The hop to Bimini takes under an hour, and you can meet a yacht there or stay ashore.

Option 3: Both

A popular plan is to send the yacht ahead and fly in by seaplane, or cruise over and fly home. It turns a long weekend into a real island trip without spending two days on the crossing.

What you need

  • A valid passport for every guest, and the entry requirements for your nationality.
  • Flexible timing for the crossing by sea, which depends on the weather.
  • Advance booking for winter and holiday weekends, the busiest times.

When to go

Winter and spring bring the calmest, clearest days. Summer is warmer and quieter, with more variable weather, and hurricane season runs from June through November, so plans stay flexible. See yachts, prices and seaplane details on our Bahamas and Bimini yacht charter pages.
